Abstract

The interaction of viewers with television through Twitter has been widely studied but this research addresses the use of Twitter from a different perspective. As a first objective, it was proposed to investigate how this social network takes advantage of television programs to project its image and to use it as an advertising channel, given that the television networks are already using social networks for their promotion, taking advantage of the pull of the programs that count with more audience, so it is interesting to reflect on the strategies they use in their Twitter accounts to maximize their relationship with the audience.

As a secondary objective the analysis of the content of the tweets and the interaction of the viewers with the official account of the program was considered from a threefold perspective: on the one hand, to see what content the television medium stands out about its broadcasts and with what messages it does it; secondly, what selection criterion the official account has to choose and retweet the messages of the viewers who follow the program and, thirdly, which are the messages that have been most liked and retweeted by the viewers.

The case study analyzed was the sixth edition of RTVE’s Masterchef program, whose final was a season record with 3 million viewers and a 27.7% share. In the final, the spectators published, according to data of RTVE, near 25.200, generating more than 9 million impressions. The time frame analyzed is limited from July 3 to July 10, 2018, to include the 6 days before the last program, as well as the final, issued on July 9 and the tweets released by the official account on the day, so that the selected sample would be significant to be able to approach the objective of the investigation.

As main conclusions we can point out that through this social network, they remember in their account at certain key moments the sponsors of the program, presenting them not as advertising, but as content shared with the audience, so it is a tool of advertising promotion. Along with this, it is observed that, for the most part, the tweets of spectators who are retweeted by the official MasterChef account are those in which they directly and specifically the program is mentioned positively. Other conclusions obtained from the content analysis of the tweets studied during the limited period are that the emotional themes and humor are the most commented messages and that more than 90% of the tweets have a graphic component using gifs, images or video.
