Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the most discussed technologies today. What a few years ago could only be seen in novels such as Isaac Asimov and Science Fiction films begins to be a palpable reality that, in most cases, does not leave the society that receives it unmoved. The AI is currently in research and development in practically all professional areas and there are more and more innovative solutions presented in fields such as the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, the spread of contagious diseases, the optimization of the management of humanitarian catastrophes, the experience with the client, new business or education,

AI already existed from the mid-fifties when John McCarthy coined the term for the first time. The scientist Marvin Minsky, considered one of the fathers of this technology, defined it as follows: «It is the science of making machines do things that would require intelligence if they had been made by humans.» From then until now, its evolution has been exponential and its immense potential for the future has yet to be defined.

The current popularity of AI is mainly due to the enormous progress in one of its subfields called Machine Learning (ML), which is possible thanks to the abundance of data (Big Data), the exponential increase in computational power (including computing) quantum) and Deep Learning. The ML is born from the need to equip the machines with a certain autonomy so that they can self-program and thus be able to deal more efficiently with Big Data, learning from their own experience, but with human supervision. Deep Learning goes a step further and focuses on learning the AI. In this field, algorithms are able to learn without previous human intervention.

However, all these new great opportunities that are emerging entail the responsibility of guaranteeing a good and fair AI practice. The objective of this communication is to identify the main social and ethical challenges involved in the massive uptake of AI. To do this, we have examined the literature on the most common challenges and classified them into seven groups: 1) Unwanted effects, 2) Responsibility, 3) Unknown consequences, 4) Relations between people and robots, 5) Concentration of power and wealth , 6) Ill intentional uses, and 7) AI for weapons and war. The challenges must be treated in different ways depending on their origin; some have technological solutions, while others require ethical, social or political responses. In any case, if it is not treated properly, uncertainties and unforeseen consequences are generated with a potentially large negative social impact, which could especially harm the most vulnerable groups of societies.

While the seven challenges are serious and important concerns for AI that must be addressed, we must not forget that several of the issues are not new and are linked with issues that have been of concern since the beginning of Humanity. For example, the decision making, personal, political, scientific … have not always been the most appropriate. This is one of the areas where these technologies can help the most. AI promotes data-driven decisions, in addition to debates based on experience and intuition, greatly increasing the chance of successes, and in a much shorter time. In spite of the great advantages indicated, it is very necessary to influence and take into account in each of the advances derived from the AI the negative side effects, which will have to be adequately dealt with and understood before being massively launched to the Society.
